[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Many businesses encounter websites that are strikingly similar to their own, using their trademarks and copyrighted material without permission\u2014often offering counterfeit goods or services or simply trying to scam their way to customers\u2019 payment details. Tracking down the creators can be extremely difficult, especially when they operate from abroad.<\/p>\n

While targeting the offenders can be costly and complex, there are other ways of taking action: focusing on the website itself, specifically the domain name. Even if you can\u2019t identify the responsible party, it can be possible to shut down the fraudulent domain.<\/p>\n

One often effective strategy is to report the fraud to the domain name registrar. A majority of these domain name providers have processes in place for reporting abuse, and in our experience, many will act quickly to suspend a domain linked to fraudulent activity.<\/p>\n

Additionally, if the domain name is confusingly similar to your trademark, you may be able to pursue a Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) proceeding to gain control over the domain.<\/p>\n
