{"id":5968,"date":"2019-02-15T12:07:18","date_gmt":"2019-02-15T10:07:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gulliksson.se\/?p=5968"},"modified":"2019-02-19T12:50:28","modified_gmt":"2019-02-19T10:50:28","slug":"the-controversial-new-eu-copyright-directive-is-one-step-closer-to-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gulliksson.se\/en\/the-controversial-new-eu-copyright-directive-is-one-step-closer-to-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"The controversial new EU Copyright Directive is one step closer to reality"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]On Wednesday, February 13, 2019, The Council of the EU, through its representatives of the Romanian presidency, and the European Parliament reached a provisional agreement on a draft directive that introduces changes to existing EU copyright rules in order to make it fit-for-purpose in today\u2019s digital environment.<\/p>\n<p>According to a European Parliament press release the agreement reached entails, for example that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Internet platforms, such as YouTube, Facebook and Google News, face incentives to pay for use of artists, creators and journalists\u2019 work;<\/li>\n<li>the directive will not impose filters, which has been suggested previously;<\/li>\n<li>The inclusion of an express exception in regards to some uploaded material, such as memes or GIFs, which can be shared freely;<\/li>\n<li>The inclusion of an express exception in regards to hyperlinks to news articles that are accompanied by \u201cindividual words or very short extracts\u201d, i.e. a snippet, which can be shared freely;<\/li>\n<li>Journalists shall get a share of any copyright-related revenue obtained by their press publisher;<\/li>\n<li>start-up platforms are subject to lighter obligations; and<\/li>\n<li>uploading works to online encyclopaedias in a non-commercial way, such as Wikipedia, or open source software platforms, such as GitHub, will automatically can be done freely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The new directive aims at ensuring that copyright law applies on the Internet and to empower creatives and news publishers to negotiate with internet giants. In addition, the legislators claim that the agreement reached on the draft directive safeguards the freedom of expression.<\/p>\n<p>The new directive is however, not a done deal.
